The student will make inferences about their local newspaper .

Materials

A variety of print and on-line newspapers.

Initiation

For a visual, teacher will prepare posters of three front pages including their local newspaper. The frontpage is a snapshot of the most important events. Ask class what they see. What are the differences and similarities?

Presentation

1. Give students a table on which they will list the number of local, national and international articles for each paper.

Newspaper Type  USA Today  Hartford Courant  On-line Newspaper
 Local
 National
 International

2. Model by reading the headlines and the leads of articles on the front page of one newspaper.
3. Ask students to fill in the table with the number of articles for each category. (individual or pairs)
4. Discuss with students the significance of the data gathered and the inferences that can be made about the newspaper.
5. Ask students the reasons why people buy the particular newspaper.
6. In a role play, act out how and why the papers would be purchased, i.e. why would people buy the USA Today as opposed to their local paper.
7. Have students write down three reasons why they would buy their local newspaper.

Conclusion

Have students vote with their feet by moving to the Front Page poster from the initiation section. The group at each poster will state one reason why they chose that front page.
