Index exercise
Explain how newspaper people have a language of their own and that understanding the vocabulary they use will help the students work with the newspaper. Also the index is the key to what the newspaper contains. A glance at the index will enable students to find the section of the newspaper they are looking for and the page or pages on which that section appears. So the newspaper terminology and the index exercises will help become better newspaper readers.
1. Newspaper language sheet contains the following key words and their definitions: by-line, caption, column, dateline, edition, editorial, headline, index, lead, nameplate, news brief, subhead.
2. Explain the terminology by pointing to concrete examples on the newspaper and having them follow along in their own newspaper. Then have students write each word on a piece of post-it.
3. Have students identify the various parts of the front page of their newspaper by using the post-its to label as many of the front page parts as possible.
4. Then using the newspaper, have students answer the following questions as a newspaper language activity. a)What is the full name of the paper you are using? b)What edition is your paper? c) What is the biggest headline on the front page of your paper? d)Write the by-line of one article on the front page of your paper. e) Write the dateline of one article on the front page f) Is the index for your paper on the front page?
