[Scott M. Kessel]

"My goal is to create visual art with the same intensity, emotion, and conviction that I feel while playing percussion. Just as the musician is unable to take back a note once it has been played, my prints and paintings rely deeply on the improvisational spirit. Ultimately, my intent is to make no separation between my self, what I create, and this thing called life."

As an educator, Scott Kessel combines his love of music and the visual arts. He offers workshops and performances in traditional music, the majority of his percussion and vocal experience being rooted in the oral traditions of Non-Western cultures (with a focus on Ghana, West Africa). Scott also teaches a wide variety of two and three dimensional visual arts media, including printmaking, portraiture, mask making, calligraphy, cartooning, painting, sculpture, and musical instrument making.

In addition to musical performances and visual arts exhibitions, his professional experiences include developing and teaching multi-disciplinary arts and academics programs, presenting teacher in-service workshops and working extensively with special needs populations. A teacher in public schools, private schools and prisons for over eight years, Scott holds Connecticut teacher certification in art (K-12), and has a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. He is a certified Master Teaching artist and has recieved the "Celebration of Excellence" award for his teaching.
